Benefits of doing an internship while at SCC

The common thinking is to wait till you finish your gen-ed requirements or your junior year of college to start looking into internships.

But why wait to transfer to start building your resume?

SCC has numerous opportunities for students to gain real world experience and try out different jobs to see if they want to pursue them further. Still not convinced?

Here are the reasons to add an internship to your registration for summer or fall classes:

Résumé Builder
Anyone that has ever applied for a job knows that employers are always more likely to hire the candidate with more experience. Internships are a great way to get that experience that your future employer will want to see. This is one of the rare instances that the employer will be just fine with your lackluster résumé.

Get a Feel for the Real World
It is really easy to fall in love with a career or completely dismiss it when you are looking at it in a book. It takes that taste of what your life could be like for the next 10 years or more to really know if you want to keep going down the same path. If you have no idea what you want to do, trying an internship might give you some direction. Wouldn’t you want these questions answered sooner than later?

Many majors require a certain amount of internship hours in order for you to graduate. While not all programs will let you complete your internships before you transfer, if you can, it would be more cost effective to complete your internship through a school where the cost per credit hour is much lower.

If you're convinced, you can get an internship in a multitude of ways. If you have a specific company in mind, you can apply directly through them. If you are unsure of where to start, you can go talk to the SCC department head of the field you are interested in or go to Career Services that has a book with internship opportunities.

To get credit, you need to find a faculty member to oversee your internship and sign the registration form, register with Enrollment Services, and, of course, pay for the credit hours.

You can get additional help from an SCC Career Counselor. For appointments, call 636-922-8241.

Good Luck!
